interesting review from a trekie's (sp?) perspective. Saw it in theatres and then bought the blu-ray on release. My wife I and don't follow strek trek other than TNG. But since the movie was aimed at my demographic, we were both tickled pink!

While perusing TVTropes I randomly came across DiabolusExMachina which sort of describes the same phenomenon that you're calling "Diabolus Ex Vacuus" except that it's more about a twist bitter ending (like the original ending to Clerks).

Ever see a 3 stooges episode where they're trying to fix stuff, like pasting up wallpaper and wiring chandeliers and washing windows- and everything goes wrong in wacky ways? Larry's holding the wire, a dog pees on it, he gets electrocuted, the chandelier falls on curly, larry flies through the window, moe falls off the ladder and the paste bucket turns upside down on his head- that's what this movie's plot felt like. Lots of gimmicks invented to make the characters run around really fast. I still had fun watching it. Who doesn't love seeing curly- i mean kirk get in silly fights?
