Gizmodo inspired me to make this wallpaper yesterday. Then they were gracious enough to post it this morning. I’m such an attention whore. Click the image for the full size version. Go here to buy the shirt.
One More Space Girl
Just finished this up. All in the shop. She’ll be the last for a little while as I’m up to my knees in actual, paying contracted work at the moment.
Two New Shirt Designs – “Space Girl” and “Embrace Diversity”
I’ve got two new designs up in the shirt shop. One is from the successful “Klingon Propaganda” viral campaign I did in November and the other is the second in what will hopefully be a long line of astro pin ups.
Alien Soldier Concept
Here’s a concept for an alien aggressor in the current series I’m working on for ISIS. We’re on episode 3 (Episode 2 is in post production and will be posted soon) and I needed a group of unique creatures to attack one of the main characters. He’s mostly an original concept (especially the breathing apparatus) with some body structure and outfit cues from Niven’s Kzinti.

Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future
I’ve had a pretty deep love for tropicalismo/pop duo The Bird and the Bee ever since I heard what I believe is the ultimate song about fucking, Again and Again, two years ago in a noisy cafe. The band became a mainstay in our household when our then one and half year old began referring to all music as “La La” – the name of another track from their debut album – and insisted we play The Bird and the Bee songs nearly constantly. Fortunately she moved on to Feist and then Hasidic Surf Rock before she was old enough to realize what “brain” is a euphemism for.
This month marked the release of “Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future”, which, with few exceptions, is pretty darn awesome. We were also able to attend Inara George and Greg Kurstin’s first live performance in San Francisco in nearly two years, which, with no exceptions, was pretty darn awesome. Would I please clap my hands? You bet.
So, I was easily inspired by the show and the new album’s title to make this image. I’d love to do a music video for the title track in this style…ahem…if anyone would just ask me… The pic is proportioned just right for use as an iPhone wallpaper, and would probably fit other mobile devices as well. Enjoy!
Sometimes I Impress Myself
| Here’s a little tid-bit I worked on this morning. It’s part of the Star Squadron series. I wanted to put it up as a stand alone movie because it goes by so fast I’m not sure it can be fully appreciated with all that’s going on in the scene (she’s walking across the screen toward someone. |
Cartoon Modern – A San Franciso Cityscape

I’m creating a series of illustration that will be later used in an animated presentation for city contractor Streetline. My idea for the presentation was a mid-century, UPA style with limited animation. Not only do the many simplified angles, shapes, and colors look great in a San Francisco street scene, but the 50′s are generally known for their infotainment films. Now imagine this with a little Donna Reed type music! The only part that betrays the aesthetic is the blue 2008 Toyota Yaris in the middle parking space put there to not make the scene look too dated.
The preliminary sketch for this drawing was done in Illustrator, white the actual drawing and coloring was all done in Flash. If you’d like a wallpaper of this its on my studio site under About/Stuff
Anime is Easy – Space Squadron 200X
This week starts production on a new series of one minute shorts for the non-profit Internet Sexuality Information Services (ISIS). The premise of the series is to start conversations about sexual questions and misconceptions of that all important teenage demographic. It needs to not only reach the youth, but all of them no matter what the subculture. It’s a tough job, to make something broad reaching enough to interest boys and girls, nerds, and hip hoppers a like. My immediate though? Anime space saga. More »
Sneak Preview – The Pyramid
There have been a select few who have seen parts of my new Bad Monkey Portfolio site in action, but for the most part it’s been top secret. However, there are some bits that I find hard to contain. One such element was finished today. It’s a ruined pyramid from my contact section. I’m really proud of it because its one of the few geometric objects I’ve drawn completely by hand (I usually some get help from 3D software and then build on it). I’m posting it here because it’s probably going to be a relatively small object in the final composition, but here I’m showing it in all its full sized, detailed glory.

The inspiration for this structure is our recent trip to Mexico – the basis being the Temple of the Magician in Uxmal.

Insurance Agents
Here’s the model sheet for the two henchmen in my latest project. They’re supposed to be homeowner’s insurance agents. Following in the theme of old time scifi comics the outfits should be a given. I decided to make them a gecko and duck as a play off of the Geico and Aflac mascots. True neither one is specifically a homeowner’s insurance company, but the reference will still work for those who pick up on it.I really enjoy putting realistic looking animal heads on human bodies. Its funny and creepy at the same time. I wish I could say I got the idea from Hieronymus Bosch, but Steve Purcell is probably a bigger influence here. The man draws a mean moon rat.
Expect the little guy on the bottom of the page to make a cameo as well.
Meet the Gordons
They’re the victims that need saving by Florida candidate Max Linn in his next adventure, Insurance Storm Rising. The Gordons are about to be struck by a catagory five hurricane moments after having their home owner’s insurance revoked. I’ve just completed the special effect for the hurricane and it looks pretty sweet. Be sure to check out this movie in two weeks if all goes well. Note to up and coming cartoonists and caricaturists: You don’t need to resort to stereotypes to portay ethnicity. Doing your job right should get ethnicity across along with individual personality with a simple line drawing. Color isn’t even necessary. If you can’t make someone look black or asian without big, pink lips or slanty eyes and buck teeth you should probably just shoot yourself. I’m talking to you, Akira Toriyama!
I got some wierd responses to the previous episode – Attack of the FCAT – in the St. Petersburg Times’ Buzz Section:
Hilarious! Love the profile of the female student at the end. Makes it border on an R rating. -Anonymous
Love the cartoon. Wish students looked like that when I was in high school. That girl is hot. -Anonymous
Rich, quit watching that thing, you gonna go blind. -gatordem
Which is odd because I felt Isabella, the character they are referring to and shown in the previous post, was the least sexualized woman I’d ever drawn. I even put her hair in a bun. So I’ve decided to make this episode’s heroine as hot as possible without poking her nipples through her slinky 1950′s sundress. If I’m damned if I do or don’t then I rather do.
